But no, there really isn't anything to do once you get a decent CV in the default survival mode except to just visit more of the planets and factions to see what they're like.

It's called the docking gear I belive (hover mouse over it in the menu on landing gear blocks). The rest should extend upon landing. If one of your docking pads wont extend its usually because its to far away from landing pad / block.
